Murraya Paniculata, or Orange Jasmine, is a very popular evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves and fragrant white, star-shaped flowers. They are compact and dense, making them perfect for hedging or as a specimen tree. Its glossy, dark green leaves are arranged in pairs along the stems. When crushed, the release a citrusy fragrance.

 

CARE AND GROWTH:

For optimal flowering and growth rate, plant Murraya Paniculata in a full sun to part shade position. While it can tolerate shade, a good amount of sunlight will ensure optimal growth and flowering. Ensure the soil is well-draining in order to prevent the plant becoming waterlogged and developing root rot. Applying a layer of mulch can help with retaining moisture and supressing weeds.

It is important to fertilise your plants during the growing season (Spring/Summer). A slow-release fertiliser works best. In order to maintain a dense shape, pruning is essential. Depending on your desired height, you only need to prune Murraya Paniculata around once to twice a year. Prune after flowering to encourage a bushier plant.

When planting, dig a hole that is slightly wider than the root ball of the plant and the same depth as the pot it came in. Fill with soil and water well to help settle the soil. Applying a layer of mulch can also be beneficial to retaining moisture and supressing weeds. Spray with Eco-oil to combat common pests such as aphids.

 

PLANTING IDEAS:

Hedge/Screen: Murraya Paniculata is most used for hedging and screening. It can grow up to 4 metres if left untrimmed but is usually kept shorter. It has a great, dense, growing habit, perfect for screening out neighbours!

When deciding what to plant with Murraya, consider colours and shapes that will complement and enhance it. The purple blooms of Lavender for example, provide a lovely contrast to the white flowers, as does Blue Agapanthus.

Cordylines are architecturally pleasing, with their upright, strappy foliage and are available in a range of colours. Plants like Dwarf Fountain Grass can add texture and movement to the landscape with their feathery, maroon flowers. If you’re doing a double row of hedges, a smaller grower like Japanese Buxus or Rhaphiolepis Indica Snow Maiden would look wonderful with Murraya.

Containers/Pots: The Murraya’s creamy white flowers and lush green foliage make it perfect for planting in pots and containers, especially in areas with little space such as patios.

Topiary/Specimen: Murraya Paniculata responds well to pruning and can easily be shaped, making it ideal for use as a topiary.

 

SPACING:

Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for hedging we suggest the following;

For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 2-3 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 1-2 plants per metre. This is a guide only.

For accent planting, every 1.5m is ideal.
