Nandina Domestica Nana, also known as dwarf Sacred Bamboo, is a small growing cultivar of the Nandina Domestica plant. It is native to Eastern Asia. This variety is very popular due to its compact size, distinctive foliage and versatility in landscaping. Throughout the year, Nandina Domestica Nana will undergo changes in the colour of its foliage, providing different looks in various seasons. The Nandina’s Winter look is its most impressive and the reason why many people choose this plant. The foliage turns a brilliant, bright red, making it an instant standout in any garden! As the weather warms up, the foliage begins to transition to a light green and by Summer, most of the red will have disappeared. Its visual diversity makes it an appealing choice for many gardens!

CARE AND GROWTH:

Nandina Domestica Nana will thrive with very little maintenance! Plant in full sun to part shade. During the first 12 weeks, make sure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. This is the plant’s establishment period. After this, it will become more drought tolerant and require watering less frequently. Please remember it is essential to increase watering on hot and windy days.

Fertilise in Spring with a slow-release fertiliser. Prune in Spring to encourage a bushy growth habit and avoid the plant becoming leggy. Pruning will also allow you to keep the plant at any desired height. Nandina Domestica Nana will typically reach a height and width of approximately 60cm.  Its slow growth rate make it ideal for small spaces and container planting.

Spray with Eco-oil to treat common pests such as aphids.

PLANTING IDEAS:

Low Hedge and Borders: Nandina Domestica Nana is a popular choice if you’re looking for a low growing hedge or border plants as it adds colour and structure in no time.

Ornamental: Its ever-changing colour palette makes the Nandina a fantastic accent plant. They look great when mass planted, adding bursts of colour to any space.

Containers/Pots: Keep your Nandina in a container or decorative pot for an easy to care for feature plant. Great for patios and entryways!

When it comes to Nandina Domestica Nana, the options are endless! Plant as a second hedge in front of greener plants such as Murraya and Sweet Viburnum in order to get a pop of colour, or space around feature trees. Mix with flowering ground covers like Gardenia Radicans and Myoporum.

Underplanting Nandina Nana with native grasses such as Lirope and Lomandra is another idea. The neat foliage of the grasses create a lovely border or ground cover beneath the Nandina.

SPACING:

Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for hedging we suggest the following;

For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 3-4 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 2-3 plants per metre. This is a guide only.

When planting, dig the hole the same depth as the pot and slightly wider. This will make it easier to place your plants. Do not bury the plant too deep, making sure the foliage is not covered.

For accent planting, space every 1-1.5m apart.

POT SIZES:

Nandina Domestica Nana is one of our best-sellers due to its versatility. We stock them in a range of pot sizes from 140mm-300mm. We have something to suit every need and budget. Our 140mm and 200mm are the common starting sizes, but if you’re after something a bit more advanced, have a look at our 250mm and 300mm.

OTHER VARIETIES:

There are several varieties in the Nandina family. Some of our favourites include Nandina Moonbay, Nandina Gulfstream and Nandina Obsession. All are nice, compact growers with foliage that differs slightly from one another. The Obsession for example, has a more intense red foliage colour and maintains its red colour for longer than other cultivars whilst Moon Bay has thinner foliage. Check out these Nandinas product pages for more information on each variety.

If you’re after a variety that is not listed on our site, please send us an email and we will endeavour to find it for you!
