Gardenia Augusta Florida (also known as Cape Jasmine) is a medium-sized shrub with gorgeous green, glossy foliage and beautifully scented, white flowers during the warmer months. Native to Eastern Asia, the ‘Florida’ variety is the most popular Gardenia for hedging in Australia.

Gardenia Augusta Florida is a hardy plant and will thrive under the right conditions. Easy to care for, this plant has a variety of uses including hedging, container planting, cut flowers, sensory gardens and topiary standards.

 

CARE AND GROWTH:

Plant in a well-draining soil that is kept moist but not waterlogged. During the plant’s establishment period (around 12 weeks), make sure to water consistently. Increase frequency of watering on hot and windy days. Once established, they can become drought and frost tolerant.

Gardenia Augusta Florida prefer a position in full sun to part shade. Ensure you plants are receiving enough light, as too much shade will result in them becoming leggy and impact the amount of flowers they produce. Fertilise in early spring with a slow-release fertiliser. They respond extremely well to pruning. Prune after flowering to remove dead branches and maintain a nice, bushy shape. Avoid pruning in Winter as the plant may go into shock. Do not fertilise in Winter. Mulching is a great option after planting to help supress weeds and retain moisture.

If your plants are struggling with aphids, scale or other common pests, simply spray with Eco-oil to get them back to full health.

If you’re after a small, flowering hedge, Gardenia Augusta Florida is the perfect choice! With an approximate height and width of up to 1m, you can maintain it at any height you choose just by pruning once or twice a year. When kept short, it makes a great border plant on garden edges and walkways. Pair it with a groundcover or plant around a feature tree or accent plants for a beautiful effect.

Aside from hedging, Gardenia Augusta Florida has many other uses. They look fantastic when kept in pots or containers, especially when they produce an abundance of sweet-smelling, rose-like, white flowers. Perfect for entryways and patios!

SPACING:

Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for hedging we suggest the following;

For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 3-4 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 2-3 plants per metre. This is a guide only.

When planting, dig the hole the same depth as the pot and slightly wider. This will make it easier to place your plants. Do not bury the plant too deep, making sure the foliage is not covered.

Our nursery is stocked with several varieties of Gardenia. Gardenia Radicans is a small grower, great for use as a ground cover and Gardenia Magnifica is most similar to Florida, but with larger leaves. Both have the same beautiful scented white flowers.
