Trachelospermum Jasminoides Tricolour is a variegated, ground cover version of the classic Trachelospermum Star Jasmine. It has distinctive, gorgeous foliage. Its oval-shaped leaves have a dark green centre which contrasts with beautiful cream to pinkish-white edges. The triple-coloured leaves are the reason it is called ‘Tricolour’. The perfect plant for adding a splash of colour to your garden! Although it is a slower grower than the ‘Star Jasmine’, it remains as popular as ever, particularly with landscapers, due to its versatility and year-round foliage colours.
CARE AND GROWTH:
Trachelospermum Jasminoides Tricolour will thrive in a full sun to part shade position. At least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight is ideal to ensure it maintains its gorgeous colours and growth rate. Insufficient light may result in reduced flowering and less vibrant foliage.
Plant in a well-draining soil to avoid root rot. You may even like to apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants as this will help supress weeds and retain moisture.
It is essential to water frequently after planting for around the first 12 weeks. This is known as the plant’s establishment period. After this, you can reduce watering. Remember to increase watering on extremely hot and windy days to avoid the plant drying out!
Prune in Spring to encourage a bushy, compact growth habit. Regular pruning (once to twice a year) will maintain the shape and size, encourage new growth and promote air circulation. Fertilise in Spring with a slow-release fertiliser.
PLANTING IDEAS:
Ground cover: The most common use for the Trachelospermum Jasminoides Tricolour is as a ground cover. It will create a stunning carpet of variegated leaves, and is especially effective in larger areas. Great for underplanting hedges and feature plants as it adds colour and texture to the ground.
Pot/Container planting: The coloured foliage of the Tricolour makes it a great choice for pots and containers. Great for adding a pop of colour to smaller space such as patios and balconies.
Borders: Trachelopermum Jasminoides Tricolour can reach a max height of around 50cm, making it perfect for use as a border plant.
Aesthetic Contrast: The variegated foliage provides a striking contrast when planted alongside plants with solid coloured leaves such as Japanese Buxus and Sweet Viburnum.
Embankments: Plant along embankments and watch it cascade! A great, low-maintenance option.
SPACING:
Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for ground cover we suggest the following;
For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 3-4 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 2-3 plants per metre. This is a guide only.
For accent planting, every 1-1.5m is ideal.
