Star Jasmine Trachelospermum Jasminoides is a very popular plant that can be grown as a ground cover, hedge or a climbing vine. It has glossy, dark green leaves that grow in pairs opposite each other on the stem. The Star Jasmine is prized for its fragrant, star-shaped white flowers which appear in clusters from late Spring to early Summer. In favourable conditions, they may also flower sporadically throughout the year.
CARE AND GROWTH:
Star Jasmine Trachelospermum Jasminoides prefer a position in full sun to part shade. To encourage abundant flowering, ensure your plants are receiving enough sunlight, around 4-6 hours of direct light each day. Use a well-draining soil mix to ensure your plants do not become waterlogged. Water frequently during the establishment period (around 12 weeks) and reduce watering after as they will become more drought tolerant.
Star Jasmine Trachelospermum Jasminoides respond very well to pruning. Pruning is vital to encourage bushier growth, and this is best done during the warmer months, after flowering. Fertilise in Spring with a slow-release fertiliser. This will help your plants grow faster, maintain their lush foliage and encourage lots of flowers!
A layer of mulch around the base of the plants is a great option for suppressing weeds and regulating soil temperature.
Hedge: Ideal for use as a low hedge. Prune to maintain a nice, compact shape.
Ground cover: Keep your Star Jasmine Trachelospermum Jasminoides pruned low and you can use it as a ground cover. Perfect for filling in gaps, suppressing weeds and covering large spaces with a gorgeous flowering plant!
Climbing vine: Train your Star Jasmine to climb and you’ll have the perfect plant to cover trellises, fences and walls. In the warmer months, you’re rewarded with sweet-smelling, white flowers!
Ornamental planting: Star Jasmine Trachelospermum Jasminoides is primarily grown for its aesthetic appeal. Its gorgeous, perfumed flowers and lush foliage make it a perfect choice for a variety of spaces.
Pots/Containers: When in flower, Trachelospermum Jasminoides makes a great feature/statement plant when planted in decorative pots or containers. Great for small spaces, such as balconies.
Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for hedging we suggest the following;
For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 3-4 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 2-3 plants per metre. This is a guide only.
For accent planting, every 1-1.5m is ideal.
