Sagina Subulata Aurea, commonly known as golden pearlwort or Scotch moss, is a low-growing perennial plant with small, bright green to golden-yellow leaves that form a dense, moss-like mat. Sagina Subulata Aurea is prized for its ability to create a carpet-like effect with its low-growing and spreading nature, making it an excellent choice for various landscaping applications. In late spring to early summer, it produces small, white, star-shaped flowers that add a delicate touch to the overall appearance.
CARE AND GROWTH:
Sagina Subulata Aurea thrives in partial to full sun. It prefers a location with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it can tolerate some shade, the plant tends to develop a more vibrant golden color in full sun. Plant in a well-draining soil. Adding organic matter to the soil can improve its fertility and drainage.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ensure that the soil doesn’t dry out completely, especially during hot and dry periods.
Feed the plant with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat appearance. This can also help stimulate new growth.
PLANTING IDEAS:
Ground Cover: Sagina Subulata Aurea is often used as a ground cover due to its low, spreading habit.
Rock Gardens: It’s suitable for rock gardens, where its compact form and golden colour can provide an attractive contrast.
Container Gardens: It can be grown in containers or hanging baskets, cascading over the edges for added visual interest.
Between Pavers: Sagina can be planted between stepping stones or pavers to create a lush, green, and golden pathway.
