Nandina Obsession™ is a new and improved cultivar of Nandina Gulfstream with striking, bright red growth most of the year. Its Japanese name ‘Seika’ translates to ‘sacred fire’ and is reference to its vibrant, new growth. In Winter, Nandina Obsession™ is covered in a full flush of red and in the warmer months, the red new growth contrasts beautifully against the older green foliage. A fantastic dwarf shrub that requires very little maintenance, Nandina Obsession™ will add a pop of colour to your garden and can be used as a low hedge, feature or container plant.
CARE AND GROWTH:
Nandina Obsession™ prefers a position in full sun to part shade and likes a well-draining soil. For the first few months after planting, water regularly until the plant establishes itself. Increase watering on extremely hot or windy days to prevent drying out.
While it can tolerate some shade, the plant tends to display more vibrant colours when exposed to sunlight. Adequate sunlight helps enhance the red and pink hues in the foliage.
Fertiliser in Spring with a slow release fertiliser and optionally, you can add a layer of mulch to assist regulating soil temperature, retaining moisture and suppressing weeds.
Nandina Obsession™ is a quick grower but given its compact and small height, it will only require a prune every 2-3 years. Removing older stems can encourage new growth with more intense colours. Avoid pruning on extremely hot or cold days. Spring is the perfect time for a trim!
PLANTING IDEAS:
Low Hedge/Border: Nandina Obsession™ can reach a maximum height and width of around 70cm, making it ideal for use as a low hedge or border plant.
Feature/Accent planting: The vibrant, red colour of the Nandina Obsession™ makes it a fantastic choice as a standalone feature plant or mass planted.
Pots/Containers: Its compact size and colourful appearance will pair well with a decorative pot or container. Great for small spaces, such as patios or balconies.
If you’re looking for low maintenance plants, Nandina Obsession™ is a great choice as it requires minimal care once established.
If space allows plant as a second row hedge/border in front of a larger hedging plant such as Japanese Box, Murraya or Sweet Viburnum as the red of the Nandina will contrast nicely. Underplant the Nandina Obsession™ with groundcovers like Gardenia Radicans, Trachelospermum Tricolour or Ajuga.
Once established, Nandina Obsession™ is a hardy plant and can tolerate cold and drought.
SPACING:
Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for hedging we suggest the following;
For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 3-4 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 2-3 plants per metre. This is a guide only.
For accent planting, every 1-1.5m is ideal.
POT SIZES:
Whatever your requirements, we have the pot size for you! We stock Nandina Obsession™ in multiple sizes from 140mm-250mm. The most popular size is our 200mm pots but if you’re after something a little smaller (140mm) or bigger (250mm), we’ve got you covered!
