The New Zealand Christmas bush can grow into a tree around 12m (40′) tall. It has dark green leaves with grey felty undersides, and masses of pin-cushion, crimson red flowers in spring and summer. A variegated variety (‘Variegata’) is also commonly seen. Best grown as a hedge for screening purposes. As long as it is pruned twice a year it will grow into a dense hedge with the height controlled to anything under 6m!
