Magnolia Teddy Bear is fast becoming the number one choice for a Magnolia tree with its popularity quickly eclipsing the Magnolia Little Gem. It has been bred to be smaller and more compact, with large, lush leaves and gorgeous cup-shaped, white flowers. The Magnolia Teddy Bear has a neat, cone shaped growth habit. It has large, glossy green leaves that contrast beautifully with the signature brown/bronze, soft underside that many Magnolias varieties have.
It is a dense grower, making it a perfect evergreen screening plant! It small size also makes it ideal for container or accent planting.
CARE AND GROWTH:
Magnolia Teddy Bear will thrive in full sun to part shade. To maintain its vibrant colour and growth speed, at least 5-6 hours of sunlight per day is essential. During the establishment period (up to 12 weeks after planting), ensure soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Increase watering frequency in extreme weather conditions (hot or windy).
Heavy pruning is usually not required but the occasional trim will help remove dead branches and encourage new growth. Trimming will also help keep a nice compact shape. Spring is the ideal time for this as well as feeding. Feed approximately ever 6 months with a slow-release fertiliser.
PLANTING IDEAS:
Screening: Its compact growth, dense foliage and ability to tolerate pruning make it perfect for screening out neighbours and providing a barrier against strong winds.
Feature Tree: A brilliant focal point in any space, the Magnolia Teddy Bear is an elegant and neat option for a feature tree. They also look great spaced out and mass planted, particularly when in flower!
Pots/Containers: Due to its compact size, Magnolia Teddy Bear can also be grown in large pots or containers, making it suitable for patios or smaller outdoor spaces.
Hedging: In some cases, Magnolia Teddy Bear can be used to create a small, informal hedge. However, this will require more frequent pruning to maintain the desired shape.
Ornamental: Often used as ornamental trees in landscapes, particularly in smaller gardens where space is limited.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to what you can plant with the Magnolia Teddy Bear. A large, lush green background hedge such as Sweet Viburnum can really enhance the colours of the Teddy Bear.
Underplant it with colourful groundcovers like Trachelospermum Tricolour and Myoporum or short shrubs like Nandina Obsession or Westringia Smokey. Native grasses like Lomandra Lime Tuff and Poa can soften the landscape.
SPACING:
Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for screening we suggest the following;
For smaller pot sizes (250mm and 300mm) we recommend 1-2 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (400mm – 100L), every 1.5-2m. This is a guide only.
For accent planting, every 2-3m is ideal.
POT SIZES:
To offer our customer more flexibility, we stock the Magnolia Teddy Bear in a range of sizes from 250mm-100L. Our smaller sizes are great if you’re on a budget and our larger sizes will give you an instant impact!
