Korean Box or Buxus (also known as Buxus ‘Micro Micro’) is a small, evergreen shrub that is very popular in many different landscapes. It has oval-shaped, glossy green leaves all year round and a dense growing habit. Korean Box is prized for its versatility and when properly cared for, can add structure, formality and greenery to your space.
CARE AND GROWTH:
Korean Box prefers a position in full sun to part shade and needs a well-draining soil to avoid becoming waterlogged. After planting, the plant will take around 12 weeks to establish itself. During this time, it is important to water frequently (every 1-2 days). On extremely hot or windy days, it is essential that you increase watering. Once established, your Korean Box will become more drought-tolerant, and you can decrease watering.
Prune in Spring to help maintain height and shape. Also feed at this time with a slow-release fertiliser.
PLANTING IDEAS:
Low Hedge/Border: The most common use for Korean Box is as a low hedge or border due to its compact growth habit. It can be used as a formal or informal hedge. Great for planting on either side of driveways.
If space allows plant as a smaller, second row hedge in front of taller growing plants such as Sweet Viburnum or Photinia Red Robin for a layered effect. Korean Box goes well with more colourful plants so the options are endless!
Topiary: Korean Box is a relatively slow growing, making it ideal for topiary work. It can be shaped into various forms such as balls, spirals and cones.
Pots/Containers: A perfect choice for growing in pots or containers, on patios or balconies. Great as an ornamental feature near entrances.
If you’re looking for low maintenance plants, Korean Box is a great choice as it requires minimal care once established.
SPACING:
Recommended spacing will depend on your intended use but for hedging we suggest the following;
For smaller pot sizes (140mm and 200mm) we recommend 3-4 plants per metre and for larger pot sizes (300mm and 400mm), 2-3 plants per metre. This is a guide only.
For accent planting, every 1-1.5m is ideal.
