COMMON NAME: BROMELIAD, ALCANTAREA IMPERIALIS RUBRA
Pot Size: 35cm / 14″ / 350mm
This lush tropical plant Alcantarea imperialis, has a huge base growing up to 1.5m wide (in the ground) that consists of a dense rosette of wide strap-like, corrugated leaves with a smooth surface. The underside of the leaves are a wonderful red colour, best placed in a raised bed or decorative pot to enjoy the colourful foliage.
The plant takes many years to flower, but when it does, it produces a tall 3m flower spike that has red bracts along the stem and racemes of small scented creamy yellow flowers growing from each bract. The flowers spike can last for up to 12 months at a time.
Some bromeliads have a faint scent while others are heavily perfumed. They are frost tender and require lots of water during dry periods. Bromeliads are perfect when grown in pots; they make for great feature plants and work well indoors with filtered light.
